In case you didn’t know…
Roman Reigns made his tragic leukaemia announcement on late October 2018. It was an emotional night for The Shield, filled with a lot of uncertainty. Ambrose and Rollins would win the RAW Tag Team Championships in the main event that same night, making it the perfect moment.
Ambrose turned on him immediately and brutally attacked him, much to the shock of the WWE Universe. However, their program didn’t really work out as hoped, and Dean Ambrose’s heel character didn’t make waves as expected. Their TLC match was a big flop and received little to no reaction from the crowd.
On January 2019, it was announced that Dean Ambrose would not be renewing his WWE contract and he quietly turned babyface again afterwards. His contract is set to expire just after WrestleMania 35.
The heart of the matter
In an interview with Yahoo Sports, Rollins said (H/T Fightful)
We don’t blame Rollins for thinking so, but in this case, it’s possible that the idea wasn’t bad, but the execution was. That’s why it didn’t work out.
He further mentioned that having a final match with The Shield was one of the most emotional experiences of his life and knowing that it would be their final stand, they were able to soak it all in.
What’s next?
Seth Rollins takes on Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 35 for the Universal Championship, while Dean Ambrose doesn’t have a match. He’s set to leave right after WrestleMania 35, which means this Monday could be the last time we see him on WWE TV.
